  11. Ramses II was ruler of Egypt for 66 years from 1279 BC to 1213 BC and was also the third pharaoh (meaning living god) of Egypt’s 19th dynasty. He fathered approximately 100 sons and 60 daughters and was one of the longest-lived kings. His father was Seti I. The archaeological complex of Abu Simbel carved out of sandstone mountain is called Ramses the great. Ramses is famous and called ‘Ramses the Great ’for many reasons:

    1. He built colossal statues of himself in the rock temples of Abu Simbel that proved he was powerful.

    2. He led many military expeditions gaining control and securing territories around Egypt.

    3. He had an army of 100,000 strong men which he used in battle to win victories. He wanted to show other rulers as well as his people that he was commanding Egypt.

    4. Ramses II was the first King in history who made a peace treaty with his Hittite enemy to avoid frequent battles and barter harbours and gain more land. He created peace with his neighbouring rulers.

    5. On his 30th year of reign, Ramses was converted to god status after celebrating a jubilee called the Sed festival. By becoming god, his first son Amun-her-khepsef gained the throne automatically. Ramses had many sons to take over the throne after he was dead so that his dynasty would survive longer (18th dynasty had run out of heirs).

    6. He built monuments around Egyptian borders to remind his neighbours that they had to continue to pay him tribute in the form of gold, labour and exotic materials. He built cities, temples and monuments on a very large scale changing the face of Egypt and to ensure that his legacy would survive weathering. Even though Ramses had not constructed certain buildings in reality, he displayed his name as cartouches on them to trick people in believing that he was the most powerful ruler. Every temple in Thebes honoured Ramses II divine image and power. To prevent alteration by other kings, his masons were ordered to deeply engrave his name on stone and make them more visible in the Egyptian sun, reflecting his relationship with the sun god, Ra.

    7. His country flourished under his reign.

    8. He laid the city of Pi-Ramses in the Nile delta as his new capital for managing traders and trade routes. He dared to name his city after himself for his own popularity.

    9. When Ramses was unhappy with his half-divine position, he was converted to a unique god with a sun disc on his head, raising himself higher in his people’s eyes. Ramses used art to publicize his victories over foreigners, which are depicted on numerous temple carvings
    .
    10. His mummy has avoided destruction for 3000 years, having been expertly embalmed at the time. He wanted his mummy to be popular even after death.

  12. Ramses The Great is not exactly what all people think. As he use to steal other peoples statues and pretend that they were made by servant of his, just to show off. However, some people disagree and think that that he is The great, but it is a question with no right or wrong answer .
