Vikings used wood to make long ships. They also made cargo ships as we have in modern life today.A long ship would have been 15 knots.knots means boat. They use what you call for the ones we use to control a small boat.Ships were used in war and used to fish out fish to provide food so their village does not die in starvation.
ReplyDeleteVikings came from Scandinavia, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The Vikings came to Britain by boat. The Vikings boats where made out of wood. The boats where 15 meters long. The boats had oars and a sail. Some boats were used for cargo ships, battle ships and trading ships.

ReplyDeleteViking Longships
ReplyDeleteVikings were a people that invaded the country during the Anglo-Saxon period, and took over Britain. They came from Denmark, Scandinavia and Norway, sailed to Britain by ship and slaughtered many of the people, burned down all the monasteries and made the Anglo-Saxons live under their command.
Vikings were very good sailors, and famous for many things. One of them was their longships. They were made of overlapping planks of oak wood joined together, which made the ships much stronger. Furthermore, there would also be a huge, square sail, decorated with either stripe or diamond patterns, which would be made of woven wool. The prow of the ship (the front part) was often shaped like the head of a snake or dragon.
They would mostly be 30 metres (98½ feet), and could carry up to 60 men, who would eat and sleep on deck. When they would row, they would sit on chests which contained their belongings.
The ships were powered either by oars or wind, and had one large, sail, as mentioned above. They could have 24---50 oars, depending on their size. Leather strips crisscrossed the wool to keep its shape when it was wet. Viking longships also had oars, if there was no wind --- a steering oar or 'steerboard' was used to steer the ships. This structure and shape meant that the Viking longships could sail at up to a speed of 10mph (18kmph).
Viking longships were used in battles, due to their slim and slender physique, which meant they could move agilely and quickly. They also used merchant ships and cargo ships, which were slower but wider, so that they had much more space in them for their load, which was often goods. Some other Viking ships included ferries and fishing boats. Viking ships were so important that the richest nobles would be buried in them.
Viking ships would often be named things like: Sea Snake, Raven of the Wind, or Serpent of the Sea.
The Vikings were manly Danes from Denmark but some of them also came from Norway and Sweden. They came on long ships that travelled across the sea so they could attack Saxons and steal anything valuable. They even attacked monasteries.
ReplyDeleteThe Vikings were very good sailors. Their longships were made of oak (or pine in Norway). They were long and thin so they could move around easily. They had a square sail but also lots of oars down the side so the ship could be rowed too. Some of them had shields along the side to protect the rowers. At the back of the ship was a rudder for steering and at the front there was usually a carved wooden figurehead. The Vikings made the ships watertight by filling the gaps between the wood with moss or sometimes-animal hair mixed with tar. The longships were used to make raids or carry warriors into battle.

Vikings
ReplyDeleteThe Vikings were people who invaded England. They came from Denmark, Scandinavia and Norway. Vikings used longships to travel. They fought the Anglo-Saxons in order to take power but didn't kill them all. Most of the Anglo-Saxons were kept as slaves or worked under the command of the Vikings.
The Viking's ships were made of wood and were 15meteres long. Since fish was what many Vikings ate ships were very important to them. It could carry up to 60 men. The ships were powered by oar or wind. Depending on the size of the ship/boat there would be men in-charge of the oars.
A Viking ship was made of wood and were usually 15 meters long. They used 60 men altogether who would use oars to push the ships. Some were also pushed by wind. They were mostly used to battle other people.
ReplyDeleteViking Longboats
ReplyDeleteThe Vikings were a vast civilization that invaded England (or Angland) at that time as the Anglo-Saxons stayed in England at the time. They came to England in circa. 700 AD and departed in 1066, when Harold the second (the Viking ruler at the time) lost in the Battle of Hastings to William the Conqueror of the Normans (a French clan). In between those times, the Vikings made new, fascinating things, such as the Viking Longboat.
The Viking Longboat was a large boat that Vikings used to travel across seas. They could sail in shallow water. So they could travel up rivers as well as across the sea. In a raid, a ship could be hauled up on a beach. The Vikings could jump out and start fighting, and then make a quick getaway if they were chased.
The Vikings would take down a large Oak tree and make slim planks out of it. They would weave the planks together and then stuff some wool as well. Then they would stick shields and oars to the edge of the boat.
The largest ever Viking ship – the Gokstad was 23 metres in length! It could fit over 100 Vikings!
The ship moved by the wind. Usually, Viking Longboats had a couple of sails. However, these were not the ordinary sails, they were made in a square shape, firmly placed to the ground, and the mast was made of wool.
Viking boats were used when the Vikings travelled overseas. The most common reason why the Vikings used their Longboats, was when they were about to raid a place, or on their way to war. This was also an efficient way to travel short distances.
The Viking period was from 700ACE to 1100ACE. During this time, many Vikings left their family to sail out in their longships: they would catch fish, search for better land, and try to invade other countries, such as Britain. They came from Scandinavian countries, such as Denmark and Sweden.
ReplyDeleteTheir longships were essential because they enabled the Vikings to do so many things. They were around 15 metres in length and could carry 60 men. The Vikings on board used the sun and stars to help them navigate. The prow of the boat was usually carved into the shape of a serpent or dragon to frighten the spirit of the land they were invading, or of a sea monster.
Viking ships were preferably made of oak wood to keep it from sinking the sides of the ships would have to be kept around the same weight . These ships were usualy made 15 meters long to carry all the goods they transport . The ships used around 50 to 60 oars . t as its the main way to get food .

ReplyDeleteWhere did they come from?
They came from three countries of Scandinavia: Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
How did they get to Britain?
They came by long ships.
What were the long ships made of?
The actual ship was made of oakwood but the sail was made of wool.
How big was it?
It was thirty metres and could carry 60 men.
How did they move?
By oars or the wind.
What were the ship used for?
They were used to travel to different places.
Vikings used many kinds of boats and ships. One type of those ships were called long ships. Long ships were used to travel to far away places when the Vikings lived. The Vikings also build smaller boats that were used for fishing and going on shorter trips. The wood is overlapped with animal fat or tar to cover gaps. They only had one large sail on their boats. When there was not enough wind for the sail, the men would row with wooden oars. These ships where made out of oak tree wood.
ReplyDeleteThe Viking Age in Britain began about 1,200 years ago in the 9th Century AD and lasted for just over 200 years.
ReplyDeleteAbout the year 800, bands of fierce raiders began to attack our coasts. They were the Vikings (also called the Danes although they didn't just come from Denmark. See below).
The Vikings came across the North Sea, just as the Anglo-Saxons had done 400 years earlier. In time, like the Anglo-Saxons, the Vikings made their home here. They drove the Saxons out of part of the country and took it for themselves.
King Alfred, Saxon king of Wessex, fought them in a great battle, but he could not drive them right away and had to let them have part of the country, called Danelaw.
The Vikings were from 3 Scandinavian countries; Denmark, Norway and Sweden. They came in long ships.
ReplyDeleteWhat were long ships made of?
Wood was mainly used for Viking long ships but preferably oak to ensure it wouldn't topple over. The sail was made of wool.
How long was it?
It was approximately 30-metres long and could carry a considerable amount of 60 people for their size.
How did they move it?
with 50-60 oars and the sails moved by wind.

ReplyDeleteThe Vikings came to Britain in Longships, aka. 'Dragon-Ships'.
The Viking Longships were built for speed, and could sail in shallow river water as well as across the Sea, making them ideal for raiding or war.
They also built slower boats for passengers and cargo called Knorrs, and small boats for fishing or short journeys.
Viking longships were up to 30 metres long(nearly 100 feet!) and were made with wood from the oak tree. Iron rivets and wooden pegs were used to hold the planks of wood together. Animal wool and sticky tar from pine trees were used to keep the boat watertight.
Viking Longships had sails (made of wool) and oars to make them move. In bad weather the sail could be lowered to cover the whole ship like a tent.
If the wind was not strong enough, the oars were used to row the ship.
The ship was steered using a steering oar (at the back of the boat) very much like the rudders used today.
Longships were the Vikings longest and fastest ships. They were used for exploring, raiding and in battle. They could hold about 60 men.

ReplyDeleteWhy did the Vikings come from?
ReplyDeleteThe Vikings came from Scandinavian countries: Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
What were Viking long ships made out of?
Nearly all parts the long ships were made out of wood. The only thing that wasn't made out of wood was the sail, which was made out of wool.
How big were they?
Viking long ships were approximately 30 metres long and could carry about 60 men.
How did they move?
Normally, Vikings would use their oars to move the long ship. If this didn't work, they would rely on the wind.
What were the used for?
Viking long ships were used for carrying Vikings around. Sometimes to long distance places , for cargo or for trading.
The Vikings came from three countries Scandinavia Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The name Vikings comes from a language called ‘Old Norse’ and means a private raid. People went off raiding in ships were set to be going Viking. The Viking age in European history was about AD 700 to 1100.
ReplyDeleteViking used to travel most by water. Travelling by water was an important part of Viking culture as it transported them overseas to distant lands as both invaders and as settlers.
The Vikings also had slower passenger and cargo ships called KNORTS. They built small boats for fishing or short trips. Vikings long ships could sail and shallow water. So they could travel up rivers as well as across the sea.
They were all made from planks of timber, usually oak, overlapped and nailed together. The whips were made water tight by filling the spaces between the planks with wool, moss or animal hair, mixed tar. The ships were all the same narrow shape with swallowed draughts.
The Vikings travel to other lands such as Britain ships called long ships. The long ship was the worship of the Vikings and was able to travel relatively fast and cover a large distance.
