Who was Francis Drake and what did he achieve
during the Tudor times? Write a brief biography (in your own words) on the

Francis Drake was born in Tavistock, Devon in 1540 and went to sea at an early age. In 1567, he made one of the first English passages as part of a fleet led by his cousin John Hawkins, bringing African slaves to work in the 'New World'. Two ships were lost when they were attacked by a Spanish squadron. The Spanish people became an enemy for him and in return they thought he’s a pirate.
ReplyDeleteIn 1570 and 1571, Francis made two trading passages to the West Indies. He returned to England with a cargo of Spanish treasure and an honour as a brilliant privateer. In 1577, he was secretly hired by Elizabeth I to set off on a quest against the Spanish colonies on the American Pacific coast. He sailed with five ships, but by the time he reached the Pacific Ocean in October 1578 only one was left, his flagship the Pelican, renamed the Golden Hind.
In 1585, Francis sailed to the West Indies and the coast of Florida where he ruined Spanish cities. In 1587, war with Spain was about to happen and he entered the port of Cadiz and destroyed 30 of the ships the Spanish were getting ready against the British. In 1588, he was a vice admiral in the fleet that defeated the Armada. His last quest, with John Hawkins, was to the West Indies. The Spanish were prepared for him this time, and it was a disaster. He died on 28th January 1596 off the coast of Portobello, Panama. Hawkins died at the same time, and their bodies were buried at sea.
Francis Drake was the first Elizabethan sailor and navigator. Born in 1540, in Tavistock, Devon. He went to sea in 1567 and made one of the first working adventures. Queen Elizabeth 1 secretly told Francis to go on an expedition against the Spanish ports. Sir Francis Drake died on the 28 th January 1596 of dysentery.He was about 56 years old.

Francis Drake left the Plymouth with six ship from 13th December 1577.When Francis Drake came back the queen award him ten thousand pound. He was a slave trade and a fierce warrior.Francis Drake sailed to Africa. He was a privateer with the Spanish ship.

ReplyDeleteSir Francis Drake was born in 1540 in Devon, England. Sir Francis Drake was the first to sailor around the world for 3 years. As a sailor, Drake helped England become more stronger and powerful. The Spanish people had conquered much of the central and south America by 1550. The Spanish people had Tonnes of gold and silver back to Spain. Drake's ships used to attack the treasure and that's how they got England stronger. Drake's ship and his sailors sailed around the world collecting gold.

ReplyDeleteSir Francis Drake was born 1542 in Tavistock, Devon his parents Mary Mylwaye Drake, Edmund Drake. Francis Drake married Mary Newman in 1569. She died 12 years later, in 1581. He married again in 1585. His second wife, Elizabeth Sydenham, came from a much more important family. He did not have children with either of his wives.
Sir Francis Drake went sailing around the world at a young age he first started going to sea while living in Chatham, at the age of 12 or 13. He was an apprentice on a small trading ship which was left to him when the master died. After selling this ship, he returned to Devon and sailed with his relative John Hawkins. Together, Hawkins and Drake made the first English slaving voyages, bringing African slaves to work in the 'New World'.
He died at sea on his final voyage, off the coast of Panama, in Nombre de Dios Bay. He had been suffering from dysentery for several days and in January 1596 he finally died. His body was placed inside a lead casket and he was then slipped overboard. Two other ships, his most recent prizes, were sunk near his body. He was about 54 years old.

He started sailing at the age of 12 or 13, he was a helper on a small trading ship, until his master died. After selling the ship he returned to Devon and went sailing with his relative John Hawkins, together they made slaving voyages and were the first English to bring African slaves to work in the new world. One of his big voyages was when he travelled around the world which took three years. Originally the voyage was supposed to go to Spain but then ended up in America. Drake was worried that the five ships might get separated from each other so he gave the order to have two of them destroyed. By October 1578 the crew had reached South America and there we 58 men left. This voyage around the world allowed Drake to have a better understanding of the world’s geography.
