ReplyDeleteAfter the Romans had left Britain in 410 new people started coming hoping to make a life in Britain. The people were from Germany, the Netherlands and Demark. The biggest tribes were the Saxons, the Angles and the Jutes. They probably came to Britain to look for new land to farm because where they came from was often flooded. The Anglo-Saxons were warrior farmers who loved fighting. Once the Anglo-Saxons had settled most of England they divided it into kingdoms that each had their own royal family. The five main kingdoms were; North Umbria, Mercia, Wessex, Kent and Anglia.
The first Anglo-Saxons were pagans who prayed to many different gods. They thought these gods were in charge of rocks, trees and all of nature. They even named days of the week after gods
Woden’s day (Wednesday)-Woden was the chief of the gods.
Friya’s day (Friday)-goddess of love and beauty.
However the Pope sent a monk called Augustine to England to convert the people to Christianity. He converted King Ethelbert and then Christianity spread across Britain. Augustine set up a monastery in Canterbury and became the first Archbishop of Canterbury. Soon there were lots of monasteries in Britain. The nuns and monks taught people about Christianity but also some people how to read and write.
Anglo- Saxons built their houses out of wood. The roofs were made from straw, which was thatched. Inside there was only one room where they slept, ate and cooked.

ReplyDeleteThe Anglo-Saxons were people who invaded Britain in 459AD. They consisted of the Angles, who came from Denmark, and the Saxons, who came from Saxony (now part of Germany). The last tribe, called the Jutes, came from another area in Denmark and also attempted to take over Britain.
The Anglo-Saxons were invited by the King to help the Britons fight off the Picts, enemies who came from northern Scotland. However, they realised that the land was good for farming and growing crops, so they invited more soldiers from Denmark, until they soon took over.
When the Anglo-Saxons arrived in Britain, they were pagans, but many soon converted into Christianity. Gradually, all Anglo-Saxons turned into Christians. They had many monasteries, where monks and nuns could devote their entire life to God. The monasteries often had many beautiful drawings and sculptures, with stained glass windows. The larger ones were called abbeys, while smaller ones were known as priories. Priories were usually located near the abbeys.
Who were the Anglo-Saxons?
ReplyDeleteAnglo Saxons were people from North Germany, Denmark and Northern Holland who settled in Britain. They ruled for about 500 years after the Romans.
Why?
They were invited to help prevent Scotland and Ireland from invading Britain. It is also thought that their lands would become flooded and is was hard for them to farm and grow food. This made them look for better conditions.
What?
They separated England into five kingdoms, each with its own royal family. These kingdoms were : Northumbria, Mercia, Wessex, Kent and Anglia. They were important in naming the days of the week using the names of Saxon gods. They followed the Pagan religion and converted to Christianity on encouragement from the Pope.

The buildings that they left behind are mostly churches but some castles, their houses were made mostly from wood so didn’t survive however, churches were made out of stone so survived.
The art they left behind was mostly jewellery , intricate metal work and amour like the treasure found at Sutton Hoo. There are also some tapestries like that at Bayeux and manuscripts.
The Anglo Saxons
ReplyDeleteIn about 43AD, the Romans invaded England (or Britannia in Roman times). The Romans grew into a fierce empire and grew to a powerful civilization. But then, the Romans got the message that their home city was attacked. They had to get back fast, fleeing England. Then, England was empty.
In parts of Scandinavia, three fierce tribes, called the Angles, Saxons and Jutes took advantage of this and quickly moved to the region. They chose England as it was drier than Scandinavia and they could grow crops and farm better. The three tribes merged to become the Anglo – Saxons.
The Anglo-Saxons adored hunting and fighting. We know that as when and Anglo-Saxon dies, its possessions are buried with them. Most of the Anglo-Saxon men had spears and other types of combat material with them in their grave
The Anglo-Saxons also liked many things. This included horse racing, hunting, feasting and music-making. They played dice and board games such as draughts and chess. Entertainment during feasts included listening to a harp being played and juggling balls and knives.
Anglo-Saxon children played with balls, hoops and whipping tops (spinning tops). They also played with carved wooden toys such as horses and small wooden boats.

Who were the Anglo Saxons?
ReplyDeleteThe Anglo-Saxons inhabited Great Britain from approximately 410A.D to 1066 A.D, and comprised of mainly three tribes: the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes, apart from some other smaller tribes. They named their new-found land ‘Angle-land’, from which ‘England’ of today has been derived. They were from Germanic tribes who migrated to the Britain from Europe, and some indigenous British groups adapted some of their ways of living, their culture and their language.
Nobody’s really sure why the Anglo-Saxons came to Britain. Some sources say that they could have been invited to come to present-day England, whereas some say that the land they lived in before would flood frequently, thus making it hard to grow crops, and that they were looking for somewhere to settle down and farm. The first time they came to Britain, their invasion failed, but when the last of the Roman soldiers left Britain in 410 A.D (their home was under attack by barbarian tribes, and every soldier was needed), having not taught the British how to defend themselves, the Anglo-Saxon invasion was successful.
The Anglo-Saxons kept clear of Roman towns, and preferred to live in small villages, where they settled. However, warrior chiefs knew that a walled city made a good fortress, and so did not completely abandon some Roman towns, such as London.
They were great artists, warriors, writers, jewelers, and were very civilised people in general. The Anglo-Saxons also compiled the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, on the order of King Alfred. This was a timeline of everything that happened over a thousand years ago, and, though it’s not extremely accurate, does help hugely in helping historians understand what happened.
Religion
To begin with, the Anglo-Saxons were Pagans, and many of the customs we have today come from Pagan festivals.
However, the Pope, the leader of the Christian Church, sent a missionary, Augustine, to England to convince them to become Christians. He landed in the south, and persuaded King Ethelbert of Kent to convert to Christianity, as well as his entire village. The Pope made Augustine a Bishop, and King Ethelbert allowed him to build a church in Canterbury. Soon, Christianity was spreading rapidly, until eventually the Anglo-Saxon people became Christian, and Pagan temples were converted to Christian Churches, and Pagan festivals became Christian. Later, Augustine became St. Augustine.
A monastery was a place where monks and nuns would devote themselves to religion by doing work. Initially, the monks and nuns would have to work in the fields, or in building the monastery, but later, they began the important task of copying and translating manuscripts.
A very famous monastery was Jarrow monastery, in Northumbria, where the renowned writer, the monk Bede, lived most of his life. Nearby, the monastery of Lindisfarne was also famous for its glorious illustrated Bible, an 8th century masterpiece of Celtic-inspired art, which is now in the British Library.
Some famous Anglo-Saxon saints include St Augustine, St Aidan, St Bede and St Cuthbert.
Art and Buildings
Most of the buildings that the Anglo-Saxons left behind were churches and cathedrals, since they were very religiously devoted. Some famous churches include: All Saint’s Church, St Laurence’s Church and St Martin’s Church. An example of a famous cathedral is Ripon Cathedral.
The Anglo-Saxons were very accomplished artists, and they created many amazing pieces of art. One of the most famous Anglo-Saxon finds was a helmet found at Sutton Hoo. There are boar’s heads at the ends of the eyebrows, and a dragon’s head above the nose, together which make the shape of a bird with outstretched wings.
Anglo-Saxon, term used historically to describe any member of the Germanic peoples who, from the 5th century ce to the time of the Norman Conquest (1066), inhabited and ruled territories that are today part of England and Wales.According to St. Bede the Venerable, the Anglo-Saxons were the descendants of three different Germanic peoples—the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. By Bede’s account, those peoples originally migrated from northern Germany to the island of Britain in the 5th century at the invitation of Vortigern, a ruler of Britons, to help defend his kingdom against marauding invasions by the Picts and Scotti, who occupied what is now Scotland.
