The Mayans were famous for being one of the first civilizations with written symbols for language. What do you think this might mean?

  1. I think that the - means 5 and the dot means . This is a theory because 5+8=13 that is shown on the picture above proving that this might be correct. Mayans were the first to make a number communication.

  4. In the Mayan times, a shell represented 0, a line meant 5 and a dot was 1. The first part of the sum has a line plus a line with three dots on top. The line meant 5, so currently our sum is 5 + _ = _. Next there is another line with three dots (three dots = 3), and 5 + 3 = 8. So far the sum is 5 + 8 = _. The second half consists of two lines with three dots. Since one line is 5, two lines must be 10. We need to add 10 and 3 (because there are three dots) which equals 13. If we put both parts together, we get 5 + 8 = 13.

  5. In the Mayan time,1 line would count as five and a little dot would count as a 1 so 2 lines would mean 10 and 2 dots would mean 2. If you see a Mayan number chart , there would be a shell at the top. It would actually stand for a 0. so because the question.-add-...
so first you have to find out what a - is. So as we know that means 5. but after that there is one line and 2 dots. so one line is 5 and 3 dots is 3 so 5 plus 3 is 8. So now we just have to find out what 5+8=. So the answer is 13

  6. The line represents 5 and the dot represents 1. If one line (5) plus three dots and a line (8) must equal two lines and three dots (13). 5 + 8 = 13!!!!!!!

The Maya numeral system is vigesimal [base-twenty] positional numeral system used by the Pre-Columbian Maya civilization.
The numeral are made up threesymbols ;zero[shell shape, with the plastron uppermost],one [a dot]and five [a bar].For example, thirteen is written as three dots in a horizontal row above two horizontal lines stack above each other. 5+8=13

  8. The line is equal to a 5 and because it's 5 and 3 dot it means it is 8. 5+8=13. This means that the answer is 13

  9. In Mayan times numbers were lines and dots. The line means 5 and a plane dot means a normal 1. The sum on our homework sheet says what is 5+8=13 but instead of writing it that way in Mayan times it would look like a line+line three dots= two lines and three dots(again). It is away of representing numbers. This form of number representation was also later used by the Romans.

  11. Since a line represents 5 in Mayan language and a dot represents 1, the first number is 5 (a line), plus the second number which is 8 (a line and three dots) equals 13 or (2 lines and 3 dots) in the Mayan numerical system.

  12. One line shows 5 and a single dot equal one. If we have to work this out the answer is going to be 5+8=13. So yeah!
