Sir Francis Drake, vice admiral (c. 1540 – 27 January 1596) was an English sea captain, privateer, navigator, slaver, and politician of the Elizabethan era. Drake carried out the second circumnavigation of the world in a single expedition, from 1577 to 1580, and was the first to complete the voyage as captain while leading the expedition throughout the entire circumnavigation. With his incursion into the Pacific he inaugurated an era of privateering and piracy in the western coast of the Americas—an area that had previously been free of piracy.
Elizabeth I of England awarded Drake a knighthood in the year of 1581. He was second-in-command of the English fleet against the Spanish Armada in 1588. He died of dysentery in January of 1596 after unsuccessfully attacking San Juan, Puerto Rico.

His exploits made him a hero to the English but a pirate to the Spaniards to whom he was known as El Draque. King Philip II was said to have offered a reward of 20,000 ducats,[6] about £4 million (US$6.5m) by modern standards, for his life.

  21. Sir Francis Drake

Francis Drake is remembered for being a famous sailor, navigator and privateer during the Elizabethan era, more commonly known as the ‘Golden Age’ because of Queen Elizabeth I’s prolific reign.

He was born in between 1540 and 1544 in Tavistock, Devonshire, and as his father was a navy captain, he grew up in a house that was very close to the sea. When he was young, he went to work for a sea captain, and decided he had a passion for the sea.

Along with John Hawkins, Drake went on an expedition on The Judith, one of six ships that comprised the fleet, to Africa to capture slaves. He then sailed back across the Atlantic Ocean to Spain where he traded the slaves. However, the Spanish turned on him and attacked the fleet of ships. Francis just about made it out with The Judith alive.

Yearning for vengeance, Francis Drake decided to become a privateer (the commander of a huge warship) so he could attack enemy ships of the British, and so exact revenge on the Spanish. However, in the eyes of the Spanish, he was a pirate - after he became a privateer, he robbed many of the Spanish towns of all their loot: he became extremely wealthy. Also, Queen Elizabeth I, realising his ability, gave him a fleet of ships to take to South America and plunder the Spanish.

On 15th November 1577, Francis Drake set out with five ships, he himself commandeering the largest ship - The Pelican. He passed through the south of South America, then headed up, crossing the Pacific, then through Australasia (Oceania), past the south tip of Africa and finally back home. Along the way, he ransacked many towns and captured a Spanish ship called The Cacafuego, and stole the treasures it was carrying. In his journey, he lost all but two of his ships, and one had to be sent back, meaning he had only one ship left from his original fleet. This was The Pelican, which he renamed to The Golden Hind.

Upon his return on 26th September 1580, he officially became the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe, and the second one in the world to lead this expedition. Because of the riches and foreign spices he brought back for the queen, he was knighted Sir Francis Drake aboard The Golden Hind itself.

In the famous attack of the supposedly invincible Spanish Armada in 1588, Sir Francis Drake played an integral role; he was the vice admiral of the Royal Navy. He had an idea - at night, he sent out some empty English ships on fire, meaning that the fleet was broken up. Subsequently, with the aid of a fierce storm, the Spanish ships were either captured by the English or floundered on the rocks.

Sir Francis Drake died of dysentery at sea on 27th January 1596, as well as John Hawkins. Their bodies were both buried at sea.

  22. Francis Drake
    A pirate, explorer, privateer
    By Siddharth
Francis Drake was born between the years 1540-1544 in Dovershire. People do not know when his birthday actually was as it was some time ago, but we do know all about him. He was known as one of the most renowned mariner in British History. But it has been an ongoing question on his title on whether he was a pirate, explorer or a Privateer?
    Francis the explorer
Francis was given many positive reviews by his home country, the U.K, as he was the second person, and first in the U.K, to circumnavigate the world. He brought back spices to the country and played an essential role along with his fellow comrade Sir Walter Raleigh in the Spanish Armada in 1588. There, in the United Kingdom, Drake was knighted by the Queen herself, and was known as Francis Drake, the explorer and the nation’s hero.
    Francis the pirate
Despite the fact that he was a hero to the English, he was known as a tyrant for the Spanish. During the Spanish Armada, Drake played an important role in overthrowing the Spanish. Because of this, the Spanish thought of all the negative things to call him and in their point of view, Francis was referred as a pirate even though he might not have been one.
    Francis the privateer
Although ‘privateer’ is quite a strong word, Drake was offered the reward of 20,000 ducats to visit new places, alone. He did go solitary on many of his expeditions, but that was what he did so there was nothing wrong about that.
    Francis’s circumnavigation
In 1577, Francis Drake was appointed to discover new lands so he set of on an expedition. He was supposed to visit South America but he mistakenly circumnavigated the whole world. He came back in 1580 and his expedition was deemed a great success.
    Francis the bad
In 1560, Francis Drake took many soldiers from Spain, captive on Spanish soil. This was violating the law in Spain, another reason why Spain loathe this man so much.
