Blog Homework - 9th January 2015

Welcome back and Happy 2015!

Our first homework of the new year is all about Science!

Some materials are thermal conductors and some are thermal insulators.
Can you find out what this means and find some examples of materials which are thermal insulators and some which are thermal conductors?
Choose a material that you think would be good to put around your cup of tea to keep it warm and explain your choice.

  1. A Thermal Insulator does not let heat pass from one place to another easily.
Some examples of Thermal Insulators are Newspaper,Fabric,Wood and Plastic.

A Thermal Conductor allows heat to pass easily from one place to another.
Some examples of Thermal Conductors are Steel and Aluminium.

I think newspaper would be a good material to put around your cup of tea because it is a good Thermal Insulator

Thermal conductors allows heat to travel through them quickly, examples of good thermal conductors are steel and aluminium, these are used a lot in cooking to make saucepans, other examples are a radiator and an oven.
On a hot summers day if you go on the pavement with no socks or shoes the heat from the pavement will conduct and will burn your feet.
Thermal insulators doesn't allow heat to go pass through it easily. It can be used to keep things warm and to protect things from heat. Examples of these are plastic, wood, cardboard, rubber, wool, cloth, styrofoam.
Examples were these are used cooking, handles of pans, clothes to keep you warm and shoes to protect your feet from the hot! pavement.
I would put bubble wrap around my cup of tea to keep it warm because it would insulate the cup to keep it warm and stop you from burning your hand and it is also entertaining.

  3. A Thermal conductor is a material that allows heat to be transferred within the material itself. Metals like steel and Aluminium have objects made out of them that conduct heat like frying pan and saucpan.

A thermal insulator is something that prevents heat from moving from one place to another. Plastics, wood and some fabrics are good insulators. A winter scarf is a good example as stopping heat escaping from your body.

To keep my cup of tea warm I think to wrap it in a scarf would be a good idea as this will keep the heat in.

  4. if you didn't have tea you will need to be able to drink for four days or eat for for four days you Will get hungry and people wanted a cup of tea

  5. Thermal conductors
A thermal conductor is a material which allows energy in the form of heat, to be transferred within the material.
Metal such as silver, stainless steel and copper are good thermal conductors.

    Thermal insulators
A thermal insulator is a material which doesn’t allow the transfer of energy. Material that are poor conductors can be described as good thermal insulator.
Polystyrene, wood, paper, air and brick are good insulator.

I would choose polystyrene or cardboard to put around my tea because it is a good insulator and can keep warm things warm.

A conductor is a material that lets heat pass through it quickly and easily . Thermal means warmth . So a thermal conductor is something that lets heat pass through it quickly . Again here thermal means warmth and insulator means that it does not let heat or warmth pass through it easily or quickly . I think the best materials you should put around a cup of tea to keep it warm and hot is foil and cotton as the foil will make the heat bounce of the edge of the cup then back into the cup again so you do not need to put the kettlt back on yet again . THE END IHOPE YOU ENJOYED .

Thermal conductors: These are the materials which let heat move through them easily...
Metals such as steel and aluminium are the good thermal conductors. We use metals to make
objects that need to conduct heat well. For example metal saucepans conducts heat well,
so the food inside heats up quickly.

Thermal insulators: These are the materials which do not let heat move through them easily..
Plastics, wood and some fabrics are good thermal insulators. Thermal insulators are good at
keeping heat out and keeping heat in. Our winter scarf is a good example of thermal insulators.

TO keep a cup of tea warm, i think we can place a cup of tea on a wooden table and wrap with
a foil sheet or a paper and cover with a ceramic plate.
