We will be
investigating the Mayans in the last two weeks of this half term. Where did the Mayans live and in what time
period? As our focus is on ‘achievements’, can you find out what the Mayans are
most famous for?
Health and medicine among the ancient Maya was a complex blend of mind, body, religion, ritual and science. Medicine was practised only by a select few who were given an excellent education. These men called shamans, act as a medium between the physical world and spirit world. They practise sorcery for the purpose of healing, foresight and control over natural events. Since medicine was so closely related to religion and sorcery, it was essential that Maya shamans had vast medical knowledge and skill. It is known that the Maya sutured wounds with human hair and were even skilled dental surgeons.

Warriors spent their life training to be better warriors. It was important to be a good warrior because the Maya cities were often at war with each other. Some scholars think they were always at war.
The Maya did not use metal weapons. They had stone weapons and weapons made of wood and shells. They also carried shields.
Warriors fought battles only during the day. That's how things were done when Maya cities went to war. A temporary peace was called each night. A battle continued, day after day, until the leader of one army was hurt or killed. Once that happened, the battle was over. The army without a leader went home leaving captives and their dead behind.
The losers had to pay a tribute to the winners. This was negotiated and could be just about anything, including goods, people, textiles, gold, silver, copper, and salt. ==========home life========== Maya people had a class structured society. At the top were the nobles and priests. They had a middle class of craftsmen, traders, and warriors. At the bottom, as usually in ancient time, were the farmers and slaves.
The Maya did not use their own people as slaves. Slaves were captured from other tribes.
Archaeologists have pieced together a great deal about the ancient Maya daily life from the artifacts they have found in the ruins of Maya Cities. These artifacts include pottery, clay figures, huge statues, and the remains of pyramids and temples.
The Mayans The earliest dates of Mayans settlement was around 1800 B.C, which was also called Preclassic or Formative period. The Mayans were spread out particularly in three sub-area with distinct environmental and culture differences: the northern lowlands of the Yucatan peninsula, the southern lowlands of Peten district of northern Guatemala and adjacent portions of Mexico, Belize and Honduras. Mayans have built stone cities and monuments which has inspired and fascinated many explores and scholars for many years. They were famous for their astrology, mathematics, stone architectures and farming.
The Mayans were deeply religious and worshipped many gods related to nature, including the gods of the sun, the moon, rain and corn. At the top of Maya society were the kings were claimed to be related to god and followed a hereditary succession. 2) What Time Period? The Mayans lived from 2000 BC and the classic Maya period spanning from AD 250 to 900.
3) Mayan Achievements I have picked three achievements that I believe to be the greatest as follows:
The Maya empire is noted for having the only written language in Mesoamerica dating back to sometime around 3000 BC.
Maya people were the first to develop coca for consumption using roasted coca they made a cold, spicy chocolate drink.
The Maya were very advanced calendar makers with the most advanced of their calendars being the 'Long Count' calendar with a cycle of 5,126 years it had a numerical foundation.
The Mayans lived for over 2,000 years ago. It started from 1800 B.C.E and ended 250 A.CE I think there best achievement was making their own alphabet and it was more than 26 numbers with I think is amazing for their time, and I also think the calendar was good as well because they made their own calendar. They made different names for months and years and a month is 5 days, years are the same. The Mayans lived in South East Mexico. The Mayans were blood thirsty about their religion. So I think that those were the greatest achievement of the Mayans. By Ahmed
The Mayans lived in Mexico. The Mayans had an elaborate calendrical system, no longer in use, which obviously evolved in complete isolation from those of the old world. This system ended with the fall of the Mayan civilization. Most of the remaining knowledge of it was destroyed by the Spanish during the conquest. It was not until very recently, during the 1990s, that archeologists have finally been able to fill in many of the gaps in our knowledge of Mayan civilization, including the calendrical system.
The Mayan empire , centered in the tropical lowlands of what is now Guatemala , reached the peak of its power and influence around the sixth century A.D. . the Mayans are famous for numerous things like huge cities they built .
The Mayans were very like the Egyptians because they built Pyramids which vary in shape depending where they built it. The civilization was formed as early as 1500 BC. The Mayan religion centered the worship of many nature god. They developed astronomy, calender systems and writing. They even built observations to watch the stars. They were highly skilled as potters and weavers.
BELIEFS
The fist fully men to be created were called Wizard of the Fatal Laugh, the Wizards of the night, the careless and the black Wizards. They were worthy with intelligence and they knew everything in the world.
Gods Two- Rabbit is a god and also the name of a sacred drink created by the gods. His festival was celebrated on the second day of the third trecena of the year, called Izquitecatl and during the eighth trecena. If someone was born on the day two-rabbit it was believed they would inclined to drink alcoholic beverages.
The Mayans lived in southern Mexico and in northern America. I think that one of their achievements is making rubber, because they might have sold a lot of it to become rich. They lived over 15000 years ago. They also lived near the pyramids they built. It could be because if they made it , Mayans wanted to protect it too.
