The Mayans were famous for being one of
the first civilisations with written symbols
 for language.

What do you think this might mean?

    I think it is takeaway sum because it shows takeaway symbol.
    The first symbol is three dots and two lines they equals thirteen
    The second symbol is a line which is five
    The third symbol is three dots and one line that equals eight
    The sum is 13 - 5 = 8.

  2. The answer to the written symbols is 13 because the first symbol is 5 then next one is the addition sign then the one after that is 8 then the one after that is the equals sign and the last one is 13.

  3. I think these symbols mean 5+8=13

  4. MAYAN NUMBERS

    Mayan period of culture dated from 250-900 AD, although their society started well before this. Their civilization collapsed in the 9th century AD, so this system is not used any more.
    Zero looks like a baguette
    1=1 dot
    2=2 dots
    3=3 dots
    4=4 dots
    5=1 line
    6=1 dot on a line
    7=2 dots on a line
    8=3 dots on a line
    9=4 dots on a line
    10=2 lines
    11=1 dot on 2 lines
    12=2 dots on 2 lines
    13=3 dots on 2 lines
    14=4 dots on 2 lines
    15=3 lines
    16=1 dot on 3 lines
    17=2 dots on 3 lines
    18=3 dots on 3 lines
    19=4 dots on 3 lines
    20=4 lines
    And so on.

    The sum the teacher gave us in English writing is 13-5=8.

    The sum I thinck might be 13 because the numbers are different.
    1 = one dot.
    2 = two dots
    3 = three dots
    4 = four dots
    5 = one line
    6 = a line and dot
    And so on.
    So when a line add a line and three dots = 13.

  6. Mayan numbers
    I think it is 13 – 5 = 8 because I know that:
    One dot = 1
    One line = 5
    One shell = 0
    13 = two lines and three dots
    5 = one line
    8 = one line and three dots

  7. In numbers it is 5+8=18

  8. As Gursiman has said that one dot is worth one, and 2 dots worth two. 5 is worth a horizontal line , so if you wanted to write 10 it would be one horizontal line on top of another . I think that the code that Mrs Gale has written is 13-5=8.

  9. one dot =1 two dots = 2 so then you carry one doing that until 4 , then the five equals one horizontal .

  10. I believe that the code that Miss Gale has set us symbolises 5+8 = 13.

  11. These Mayans symbols shows that the two horizontal lines is 10 & three dots top of that indicates 3 so the
    first one is 13... and the second one is 1 horizontal line indicates 5 so it is 5.... that means 13 - 5 = 8.

  12. The Mayans used different symbols such as lines and dots. A line is worth 5 and a dot is worth 1. A line added to a line and 3 dots=2 lines and 3 dots which is the same as 5+8=13.
