  1. If you had a cold in Ancient Greek times, how might it have been cured ?????

The Greek doctors made their medical diagnosis based on examination of their patient from head to foot - this is called clinical observation. They did this while referring to Hippocratic textbooks, which told them how to do the examination and what the disease might be.

The ancient Greeks came to understand that illness had natural causes, and could not be cured by appealing to their gods. They therefore looked for natural cures, using natural substances such as garlic, vinegar and honey.

If you had a fever in Ancient Greek times, how might it have been cured?

At first, Greek doctors, like the Egyptians and Indians, believed that demons caused diseases, and that gods - like the god of medicine, Apollo's son Asclepius, could cure diseases. Greek healers tried to cure patients using sacrifice and prayer.

And this is just an extra bit of Information:

Hints to Asclepius about which part needs fixing

At first, Greek doctors, like the Egyptians and Indians, believed that demons caused diseases, and that gods - like the god of medicine, Apollo's son Asclepius, could cure diseases. Greek healers tried to cure patients using sacrifice and prayer. People often bought models of the part of their body that was sick to leave at Asclepius' shrine, as a way of letting the god know what to fix.

    And this is extra Information:

But by around 500 BC, Greek doctors became more interested in using scientific observation and logic to figure out what caused diseases and what you could do about them. Slowly Greek doctors worked out a logical system for understanding disease.

  2. HIPPOCRATES

It was Hippocrates who finally freed medicine from the shackles of magic, superstition, and the supernatural. Hippocrates made such an impression on medical history that his name is still very much associated with medicine today.

  4. Hippocrates

Hippocrates was a Greek doctor; often called 'the father of western medicine' since he made a huge impact on medical history. His name is still associated with medicine today and all newly qualified doctors have to take the Hippocratic Oath.
Hippocrates was probably the first person in history to believe that illnesses were natural occurrences and not because of supernatural forces such as Gods. He reported that they were due to problems with the body.

If you had a cold in Ancient Greek times . . .

✓ Your doctor would keep you warm - like now

If you had a fever in Ancient Greek times . . .

✓ Your doctor would make sure you were always cool and dry

  5. Hippocrates

Hippocrates is known as ‘the father of medicine’ because he found cures for lots of illnesses. He was born on the island of Cos, which was close to Turkey. His father was a physician priest. Hippocrates lived a long life and died of old age. He died in the town of Larissa.

Hippocrates based his medical ideas on his study of the human body. He thought that all illnesses had a real cause, they were not punishments from the gods or caused by evil spirits. He also believed that the parts of the body were all connected and so if somebody was ill their whole body should be treated. He believed that to get better a patient needed rest, a good diet, fresh air and to keep clean.

Today doctors take the Hippocratic Oath which means they swear to treat their patients with and keep their details secret.

Ancient Greeks doctors believed that if you were ill it was because something in your body was out of balance and that to be made well you needed to be rebalanced. Therefore if you had a cold you should be kept warm. If you had a fever and were hot and wet you should be kept cool and dry.

  6. Hippocrates

Hippocrates was known as the founder of medicine. He was born at around 460BC. He accomplished many things in life.

    How colds were cured???

    There are 3 steps/ways:-

#They would cure a cold by keeping the patient warm.

#They would treat a fever (hot and wet) by keeping the patient cool and dry.

#They used bleeding and purging -in order to rebalance two of the humours - the blood and the black bile.

How was fevers cured in Ancient Greeks???

If you had a fever it meant you had to much blood, so the doctors would cut your arm until you lost enough blood and then they would tie it up and stop the bleeding or...you would be covered in slimy, horrible blood sucking creatures called leeches.

  7. Hippocrates

Hippocrates is a man who did not believe in superstitions like when you were ill the gods punished you. He believed that illnesses were a natural cause. Hippocrates was a physician born around 460 BC . He got his wisdom from his father and grandfather. He eventually had a wife called Doriana and two children named Theussalus and Draco. Hippocrates was the founder of the Hippocratic school of medicine. He received a 20 year prison sentence for beliveing the way he did. While in prison, he wrote about medicine in books. He is known as 'The Father of Western Medcine' and is still known very well today in medicine today. Doctors must take the Hippocratic oath that means to look after patients and do not share their details.

Greek doctors believed if you were ill one of your four humors were out of balance those were Blood, Yellow Bile, Black Bile and Phlegm. If you were ill due to a cold you were kept warm and it you had a fever you were kept hot.

  8. Hippocrates of Kos (or Cos) (460 BC - 370 BC) is considered as one of the giants in the history of medicine for his contributions to the medical field as founder of the Hippocratic School of Medicine. Up until then, medicine was linked to philosophy and the practice of rituals, casting off evil spirits and incantations (Theurgy). What was taught at his school revolutionized medicine, establishing it as a discipline in its own right, and as a profession.

The Hippocratic Corpus, written by Hippocrates and colleagues at his school, consisted of about 60 early Ancient Greek medical works. He is also is credited with creating the Hippocratic Oath, a vow taken by medical students when they become qualified doctors. The oath is also taken today by other healthcare professionals. They swear to practice medicine ethically and honestly.

It is believed that Hippocrates advanced the systematic study of clinical medicine, i.e. the study of disease by direct examination of the living patient. Hippocrates and those practicing or having studied at his school were bound by the Hippocratic Oath and its strict ethical code. Students paid a fee to enter the school and were taken under their teacher's wing almost as if they were of the same family. Medical training would have included oral teaching and practical work as a teacher's assistant - the Oath states that a student must interact with patients.

However, Hippocrates also had a theory about what was inside of a human body, but the Greek government did not allow him to dissect a corpse to find out. He proposed that there were four Humors in the body, Blood, Black Bile, Yellow Bile and Phlegm. Different diseases were categorized into four different sections, one for each of the four Humors. Whichever Humor was imbalanced with the other three was supposedly the cause of illnesses. So Hippocrates made a list of symptoms and diagnosed which Humor the disease or illness fell under. Different Humors had different cures. Hippocrates believed that doing the opposite of what the symptoms were would bring the patient back to normal.

Colds and fevers both fell under the Phlegm category. Since a cold basically made you cold (its name is rather suggestive), the cure was to keep the patient warm. A fever made you hot and wet, thus the treatment was to keep the patient cool and dry.

Hippocrates was one of the first doctors. He lived in ancient Greece. If he didn't start chest surgeries then it wouldn't have happened today. Hippocrates was sent to prison because he didn't agree about how to treat patients. He made up the Hippocratic Oath which meant that if you where a doctor you couldn't tell other people what you where doing or you couldn't be a doctor if it was for money and you didn't really treat the patient properly. There are 4 humors called Yellow bile, Blood, Black bile and Phlegm.

Hippocrates one of the most famous physician of all times,he was born in 460BC on an island called COS an island near turkey.
The reason he was famous because he found cures to most illnesses. In greek times the Greeks thought that if you did a bad deed then you would be punished by an illness; and so if you pray to god hopefully you would feel better. Obviously the Greeks weren’t the best doctors, but Hippocrates stood up and said that illnesses wouldn’t happen because of doing a bad deeds, but would happen through your system.
Hippocrates had a theory of the four humours: blood-air, phlegm-water, yellow bile- fire and black bile-earth.
As we know cold and fevers are both come within the phlegm category, so to cure a cold is to keep the patient really warm .to cure a fever you would have needed to be cool and dry.

    Howe to cured the fever

In Greek Medicine, fever,or pyrexia,is seen as a manifestation of the Fire element in the human body.A localized manifestation of heat ,or Fire,is inflammation:tever is basically inflammation that has spread through the lymphaticor circulatory systems and gone systemic to affect the whole organism. Many fevers can be broken through sweating. sweat is the waste product of the Fire element, which drains excess heat and fever from the body.DANIEL
