There
are lots of stories, myths and legends. Read or listen to a few and then choose
your favourite. Write a BRIEF synopsis on the blog, telling the rest of the
class what it was all about. Keep it short, only a few sentences. Would you
recommend that they read it?
There
are some great websites, including listening to Greek stories on the BBC Schools
radio pages, http://www.bbc.co.uk/learning/schoolradio , Mr Donn’s
website http://greece.mrdonn.org/myths.html and the website
tales beyond belief.
Perseus and Medusa:
ReplyDeleteSynopsis:
Perseus must go on a quest so the king will agree that Polydectes must stay away from Danae, Perseus's mother. His quest is to defeat Medusa the most horrible creature in the land. Medusa used to be a person who had a love affair with Perseus and he knew her as Athena.
I really like this myth because it shows Perseus would give his life for his mother.
I recommend that 5SG read this.

ReplyDeleteTheseus and the Minotaur.
ReplyDeleteAlong time ago in ancient Greece there lived a beast called the Minotaur who was half man and half bull. The King of Create was terrified of him so asked his chief inventor, Daedalus, to create a maze to imprison the Minotaur. King Minos then demanded that Athens send seven young men and seven young women to him every nine years and they were fed to the Minotaur. This went on till the prince of Athens, Theseus, who was also the son of Poseidon, decided that he was going to kill the Minotaur. He travelled to Crete. When he got to Crete the kings daughter Ariadne spotted him and fell in love with the prince. She offered to help him and gave Theseus a ball of golden string. Theseus went into the maze found the Minotaur and killed him. Using the golden string he ran out to find Ariadne waiting for him. Together they sailed away. Unfortunately Theseus betrayed her and left her on a island. Luckily the wine god found her and married her
I like this story because it is exciting.

Echo and Narcissus
ReplyDeleteThis story is about a Greek hunter called Narcissus who is a very handsome man, but rejects everyone who falls in love with him. One day, Narcissus goes hunting, and a nymph called Echo spots him and falls in love with him. But, Narcissus rejects her too.
Echo runs away to a spring and grows weaker and weaker - till she dies.
The rest of the story is tragic, but it is very interesting. I recommend that you read it.
Pandora’s Box
ReplyDeleteIn Ancient Greece, there were two God brothers, Epimetheus and Prometheus, who were both kind and good-hearted. Prometheus had annoyed Zeus. But, angry over something or the other, Zeus declared that man did not deserve fire. However, Prometheus was kind, and knew how much man needed fire for food and warmth. So he stole the fire from Hephaestos a blacksmith that lived on the island of Lemnos, to give to the humans. This angered Zeus further, so he punished him by chaining him to a rock for many years. Next, Zeus went after Prometheus’s brother.
Zeus, with the help of some of the other Gods, created a woman out of clay named Pandora. Because Prometheus was being punished, Epimetheus was lonely. Zeus gave him Pandora, and the two fell in love at first sight and married. As a gift for the newlyweds, Zeus gave them a box with a key and a note that said “DO NOT OPEN.”
One day, when Epimetheus was not around, a curious Pandora opened the box. Out flew all the Evils: Death, Envy and many more, biting and stinging Pandora, and then flying off. Crying in distress, Epimetheus came running to Pandora, and she showed him the box was empty, apart from one small bug that fluttered out. It healed all of Pandora’s wounds, thanked the couple for its freedom and flew away. That was Hope, and it made all the difference in the world we know today.
One of my favourite myths is Theseus and the Minotaur. It is about a Greek called Theseus and he is stuck in a labyrinth. But he is stuck with a minotaur. What happens next is that Theseus kills the Minotaur and sails back to Athens.
ReplyDeleteOdysseus
ReplyDeletePreviously in Odysseus’s saga, our main character, had experienced the Trojan War, the battle between Menelaus and Paris (Sometimes known as Alexanders). Menelaus and his Greek army failed to break open one of Troy’s greatest defenses, their walls.
Odysseus, made a gigantic wooden horse. The warriors climbed in it and heaved it towards the front gates. The Turkish warriors of Troy thought the horse was a present from god, thus pulling it in. The Greek warriors got out of the horse at midnight, made a signal for more Greek warriors to enter Troy, and set the city of Troy ablaze. The massive 10 year war was over. Odysseus’s journey back home was about to commence.
The return journey was pretty important to the Saga so it wouldn’t be prudent to refrain from. Odysseus had finished building his ship and set off to sail back home. However on his way back, his ship broke during an abrasive storm. Odysseus and his crew were washed away to a small place. In that place was a minute cave. Odysseus explored the cave, but then realized that a cyclops was living in this cave. It spotted Odysseus and captured him along with his crew. Every day the cyclops ate one member of Odysseus’s crew. One day, Odysseus was the Cyclops’s meal.
However the day before, Odysseus had hatched a plan. He explained that every day, the Cyclops would send all his sheep grazing out. He stated that if they clung onto the sheep’s backs the Cyclops wouldn’t notice.
So Odysseus and his fellow surviving crew one afternoon escaped from the Cyclops and ran away from them.
The reason I like this Myth is because it tells us that there is always a way to something. Even when Odysseus was about to be eaten he managed to escape. He stayed calm and used his brain to solve this problem.
Pandora’s Box
ReplyDeleteZeus told Epimetheus and Prometheus to liven up Earth because it was dull. Epimetheus made animals but Prometheus discovered humans. He asked Zeus if he could give humans fire but Zeus said that fire is only for gods. Prometheus stole the fire and gave it to the humans. Zeus was furious when he heard about this so he made a storm and sent it to the humans. Zeus made a wife for Prometheus called Pandora and gave him a box he said to never open the box. One day Pandora opened the box and monsters came out. The next day she could hear a little voice coming from the box so she opened it and it was hope. It killed all of the monsters. THE END
I would recommend this book to the class because it explains how Earth was made.
I also really enjoy that Myth.
DeleteI looked at Zeus,Hera and Little Lo. Well when I saw the story it was interesting and Zeus was scared of his wife Hera and he wanted to find a new wife but he could not let Hera catch him. His wife Hera was very jealous of him. So I would recommend This story to everyone in the classroom.

The Trojan horse
ReplyDeleteThe story starts of with a very likable princess called Helen who in this part of the story is currently married to king Meneulus, however Paris the king of troy liked her very much and persuaded her to run of with him. obviously Meneulus was going to be furious that that had occurred so he declares WAR!
The battle carried on for 10 years ,until one day Meneulus dicided to build a giant wooden horse that could fit around 50 people in it, and eventually decided to put it infront of the city gatesso the would hopefully take it in as a present. once the horse was in ,by night time everyone snuck out with the gates wide open.
