Why Did We Stop Building Pyramids?

We look at some of the most amazing pyramids from South America to Egypt.

Physicists at the University of Amsterdam investigated the forces needed to pull weighty objects on a giant sled over desert sand, and discovered that dampening the sand in front of the primitive device reduces friction on the sled, making it easier to operate

Why were the pyramids build ?

In about 450 B.C. the ancient historian Herodotus reported that there were underground chambers beneath the Great Pyramid at Giza. "These chambers," he wrote, "King Cheops [Khufu] made as burial chambers for himself ..." (History, 2:124). Diodorus (c.80-20 B.C.) added more detail:

And though the two kings [i.e. Khufu and Khafre] built the pyramids to serve as their tombs, in the event neither of them was buried in them; for the multitudes, because of the hardships which they had endured in the building of them and the many cruel and violent acts of these kings, were filled with anger against those who had caused their sufferings and openly threatened to tear their bodies asunder and cast them in despite out of their tombs. Consequently each ruler when dying enjoined upon his kinsmen to bury his body secretly in an unmarked place. [Library of History, 1:64]

  3. Pyramids

Pyramids were built as tombs for dead pharaohs. They were enormous and filed with treasures so the king’s next life could be as luxurious as this one.

A Greek visitor called Herodotus said that it took the Egyptians 100,000 slaves 20 years to build one pyramid . .. the following facts prove he is wrong.
    • The pharaoh did not have 100,000 slaves in all of Egypt.
•It would have taken about 25,000 men 5 years to build one pyramid.
•The builders were actually free men who went on strike if their pay was late!
•The bakery and fish factory provided them with food which kept them in good condition.

Some people say that the Egyptians built a ramp up one side of the growing pyramid to drag blocks up to the top. The problem with this is that if a 16 tonne stone was pulled up a ramp of mud, clay and rock, it would crumble.

Others say that the builders were ordered to make a ramp around the pyramid. But this wastes just as much time and is as just as crumbly. So how did the Egyptians build their pyramids?

No one really knows. In the 1980s, a British builder suggested that they might have used wooden jacks to lift the blocks up one by one. It’s a clever idea, and it might be true, but no one knows for sure.

  4. How did the Egyptians build the pyramids?

Rocks were brought from as far as 600 miles away in a place called Aswan and transported to Giza, possibly on rafts down the Nile during the rainy season. A level surface was made, using floodwater from the Nile, and a path was built from the Nile towards Giza. The sand was wetted in front of a contraption designed to pull heavy objects, where stonemasons readied the slabs. Once the four sides of the foundation of the pyramids were prepared, each consecutive layer was added reduced in range but higher off of the ground.
As to how the rocks were added to the top - there are many ways that archeologists think this could have happened. Side ramps built of earth or wood could have been erected along the sides of the pyramids, or the workers might have simply built an earthen ramp against one side and dragged the blocks up on logs. It was a large amount of work, and took many decades to complete.

How long did it take and how many people worked on them?

Egyptian pyramids often took ten years or more to complete. According to the Greek historian Herodotus, the Great Pyramid of Giza was built in 20 years by 100,000 workers, and was meant to be a tomb for Pharaoh Khufu.

Why did they build them and what were they for?

The ancient Egyptians built pyramids as tombs for the pharaohs and their queens, and also to protect their body and their belongings after their death. They were buried in pyramids of different shapes and sizes from before the beginning of the Old Kingdom to the end of the Middle Kingdom. The ancient Egyptians believed that if the pharaoh's body could be mummified after death the pharaoh would live forever. There are about eighty pyramids known today from ancient Egypt.

Who was Pharaoh Khufu and what were his achievements?

Khufu's full name was Khnum-Khufwy, which means ‘(the god) Khnum protect me’. He was the son of Sneferu and Queen Hetepheres I, and is believed to have had three wives. He is famous for building the Great Pyramid at Giza, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, which marks the climax in pyramid building in respect to both size and quality of construction. No monument in Egypt has been surveyed and measured so often and so carefully.
Khufu came to the throne, probably during his twenties, and at once began work on his pyramid at Giza, having been the first one to do so. The entire project took about 23 years to complete, during which time 2,300,000 building blocks, weighing an average of 2.5 tons each, were moved. It’s base covers an area of 13.1 acres, and when complete, it rose to a height of 481.4 ft, the top 31 ft of which are now missing. The sheer scale of this monument stands as testament to his skills in commanding the material and human resources of his country. It is now believed the pyramids were built using conscripted labour rather than slaves. The idea that Khufu used slaves to build the pyramid comes from Greek historian Herodotus. Little is known of the events of this Pharaoh’s reign, but some indication of the extent of Egypt’s power and influence at this time is afforded by the occurrence of his name on monuments ranging from Nubia to Sinai and even farther afield.

  6. How did they build the pyramids?

First the Egyptians used a chunk of wood to get blocks of limestone. Then they use a wooden sledge to carry the rocks. The sledge was pulled by groups of men, some men got water so that carrying the sledge would be easier. Most of the workers were farmers who worked on building the pyramid during the flood season when their fields were under water. After the first level of blocks was in place, the workers built ramps of mudbrick, limestone chips and clay. The workers dragged the large stones up the ramps to build the next level of the pyramid.

    How long did it take?

It took around 20 years to build one pyramid.

How many people worked on them?

Around 600-700. Building the pyramid of Giza took 700 men!!!

    Why did they build them?

The Ancient Egyptians built Pyramids so that they could bury pharaohs in there. The pharaohs were buried in pyramids of many different shapes and sizes from before the beginning of the Old Kingdom to the end of the Middle Kingdom.

    What were they for?

The pyramids were built to protect the body of the pharaoh.

  7. Pyramids

The fourth dynasty of Egypt. It was a time of new beginnings as Pharaoh Khufu ascended the throne. As soon as he took over, his command was to build a momentous pyramid in his honor. Thus, the construction of the Great Pyramid of Giza (or Khufu) began.

Making a pyramid wasn’t as easy as you might think it is. Farmers with poverty were sent to work for the king, to work hard labor in tormenting conditions. There were eight steps to building a pyramid:
    1. Plot the areas
    2. Quarry the limestone
    3. Starting to build first blocks
    4. Building ramps to build higher levels
    5. Continue placing until only one stone is left at the top
    6. Order builders to build tombs and secret passageways in pyramid
    7. Mummify the pharaoh with all of his jewels
    8. Smoothen areas of the pyramid
Many died working in these conditions and even more got injured. About 2,300,000 pieces of 2.5 tons of limestone were carried along in groups by 20 – 25 people to the building. Approximately more than 10,000 came to work, thus making it very cramped. Workers, in the day perspired and worked long hours in the baking hot sun throughout the day. Farmers used a long copper piece named a copper chisel. The reason they chose copper was since it was a good tool for crafting. However it lost its sharpness often and had to be sharpened thoroughly every now and then.
As said, Giza was a deserted place with no forms of water in reach. This was the reason workers found it a load tougher to work. The work was hard, but at night, all the workers would crowd around a fire and tell each other stories about their villages.

In ancient Egypt, people believed that once any pharaoh died, he or she would go into the afterlife (Egyptians believed that once you died, you would come back to life once more). Egyptians thought that pharaohs needed all their possessions when they are reborn.
I think that the reason Khufu built these pyramids is because he wanted fame and glory. Evidence for this is located in the tittle – The Great Pyramid of Khufu.

But in the end, this extraordinary pyramid has been notified as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Now people wonder that this creation wasn’t so bad after all.

  8. 1. How did they build the pyramid?
The area where the pyramids were going to be built was first marked out. They made the limestone and made it into a block by quarrying it. The limestone blocks were carried up a slope and placed on top of each other a made into a pyramid shape. One of the limestone blocks was shaped as a pyramid and placed at the very top. Sand was used to smooth over the blocks.
    2. How long did the pyramids take to build?
Each pyramid took more than 20 years to build.
    3. How many people worked on them?
10,000 men, who were mostly farmers, worked on building each pyramid. Why there were so many farmers was because they owed the Pharaoh taxes. Then they were brought to where the pyramid was being built and worked as slaves.
    4. Why did they build them?
The Egyptians thought that if the Pharaoh’s body could be mummified after death then the Pharaoh would live forever.
    5. What were they for?
For holding the Pharaoh’s body so it could rest in peace in the afterlife.

    PHARAOH KHUFU
He designed the pyramid of Giza which was the first pyramid ever to be built and this was his legacy.

    How did they build pyramids?:

The pyramid stones were cut from quarries using stone and copper tools. The stones were moved to the pyramid site using barges on the river Nile and then wooden sleds. 4 large base stones were put in first. Other stones were placed on top creating a pyramid shape. How they got the upper stones in place is not known for certain, but many experts believe that the Egyptians used ramps made from mud brick coated with chips of plaster, and that the pyramid builders dragged the stones up these ramps.

    How long did it take?

The pyramids took between 20 and 30 years to build

How many people worked on them?

The pyramids were built by around 20 to 30,000 builders, NOT slaves.

Why did they build them, and what were they for?

  13. The Egyptians built pyramids by chipping out large blocks of limestone from a quarry and putting it together to form a pyramid. It took at least 20 years or more to actually build a whole pyramid because they were so big. More than 100 men were needed to make one pyramid. They were only built for pharaohs and their wife’s for when they died and for all of their belongings. Pharaoh Khufu’s greatest achievement making the first ever pyramid in all of Egypt called the pyramid of Giza.

How did they build the pyramids?
The ancient Egyptians were very famous and strong for building pyramids. They have been able to move gigantic pieces of rock to make spectacular structures.
First, they used to break big pieces of chalk or limestone. Then, the people make the stone smooth by hammering it with some tools. After, they take the stone block in a cedar sled and staked it up. In modern days a conveyer belt will do this because the ground is made from clay, Egyptians use to pour water to make the path smoother.

    How long did it take?
It tool around 20 years to build a marvellous great pyramid. The pyramid of Giza took 23 years and it was 481ft tall. Due to erosion the pyramid lost 31st and is now 449.5ft. The pyramid weighed 6.5 million tons. Each side off the pyramid were 756ft. All the four triangular slopes equally form the base. Precisely 51 min each side has an area of 5.5 acres. There are accurately 203 steps to its summit. The pyramid contains nearly 2.3 million blocks. The average weight off a block is 7 tons workers would have to set a block every 2.5 min. Over many years, its casing stones were stripped of to rebuild other buildings. We could build 30 empire state building with is masonry.

  16. The pyramids

Pyramids were built as tombs for pharaohs for when they passed away. Some pharaohs wanted their pyramid to be very grand so that people would remember them. Sometimes the royal wife would be killed and mummified and buried with the Pharaoh to keep him company in what the Egyptians called an ‘after life’. Most pyramids were robbed because the Pharaoh was buried with all his treasures.

Most pyramids took about 20 years to build. They were built out of heavy stone blocks. They were piled on top of each other. One of the hardest jobs was moving the blocks. They had to make ramps out of earth and drag the blocks up with ropes or they used rollers. Some people had to weave in and of the stones carrying jugs of water and pouring it on the rollers to keep them damp.
The Pyramids were built by high up people, probably priests, who bossed everyone around. Many of the workers were slaves but not all of them. Thousands of people worked on these buildings but it was dangerous and many people died because they were squashed by the large stones.

Pharaoh Khufu was one of the greatest pyramid builders. He built the largest pyramid at Giza, near Cairo. This pyramid is over 100 meters high and contains 2.3 million blocks of stone. It was hailed as one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world.Esme
